Liquid staking lets you earn staking rewards while keeping your tokens liquid for DeFi. Instead of locking ETH for months, you receive a liquid token (stETH, rETH) that earns yield AND can be used as collateral, traded, or provided as liquidity.

Top Liquid Staking Protocols

Protocol Token TVL APY Commission Best For
Lido stETH $15B+ 3.2-3.5% 10% DeFi composability
Rocket Pool rETH $2B+ 3.0-3.3% 5-20% Decentralization
Coinbase cbETH $3B+ 2.8-3.2% 25% Simplicity for US users
Frax sfrxETH $500M+ 3.5-4.0% 10% Highest yield
Mantle mETH $1B+ 3.3-3.8% 10% L2 ecosystem

How Liquid Staking Works

You deposit ETH into a liquid staking protocol. The protocol stakes it with validators and gives you a receipt token. This token represents your staked ETH plus accumulated rewards.

Two models exist. Rebasing tokens (stETH) increase in balance daily — if you hold 10 stETH, tomorrow you might hold 10.001 stETH. Value-accruing tokens (rETH, cbETH) stay the same quantity but increase in value relative to ETH over time.

Your liquid staking token can be used across DeFi: as collateral on Aave to borrow against, as liquidity on Curve or Uniswap, sold instantly on DEXs if you need to exit, or held in a wallet while earning yield passively.

1. Lido — Largest and Most Integrated

Lido dominates with $15B+ TVL and stETH integrated everywhere in DeFi. Use stETH as collateral on Aave, provide stETH/ETH liquidity on Curve, or simply hold it and watch your balance grow daily.

The concern: Lido controls roughly 30% of all staked ETH through about 30 professional node operators. This centralization risk is widely debated.

2. Rocket Pool — Most Decentralized

Rocket Pool has 3,000+ independent node operators worldwide. Anyone can run a node with just 8 ETH. The rETH token is value-accruing, which may be more tax-efficient than stETH’s daily rebasing.

DeFi integration is growing but still behind stETH. Choose Rocket Pool if decentralization matters to you.

3. Coinbase — Simplest for Beginners

Coinbase cbETH is the easiest option — stake directly from your Coinbase account. No wallet setup, no DeFi knowledge needed. The trade-off is the highest commission (25%) and the lowest APY.

Risks to Understand

Smart contract risk: a bug could affect the protocol and your staked ETH. Slashing risk: if validators misbehave, a portion of staked ETH can be destroyed (rare but possible). De-peg risk: liquid staking tokens can temporarily trade below ETH value during market panic, though they eventually re-peg.

Mitigate risk by diversifying across 2-3 protocols rather than staking everything with Lido.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is liquid staking better than regular staking?

For most users, yes. You earn similar APY while keeping the ability to use your tokens in DeFi or sell them instantly. Regular staking locks your ETH.

Can I lose money with liquid staking?

Your staked ETH earns yield regardless, but ETH itself can lose market value. Smart contract exploits are possible but unlikely with major protocols.

Which liquid staking token should I choose?

stETH for maximum DeFi utility, rETH for decentralization and tax efficiency, cbETH for simplicity if you use Coinbase.
